

Bowen University College of Health Sciences, Iwo, has produced 318 medical doctors for Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN)’s induction in the last 15 years it got its approval from the council and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to run medical programmes in the university.
The Provost of the college, Professor Olayele Olabiyi made the declaration at the 8th induction ceremony organised for the 2023 medical graduating students of the college, 65 of them, conducted by the Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr Tajudeen Sanusi, held at the Baptist Medical Centre, Ogbomoso recently.

According to the Provost, the university College of Health Sciences took off in 2008/2009 session after NUC’s verification in September 2008 and final approval. Immediately, he said, students were admitted to begin MBBS programmes with two disciplines; Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Bachelor of Anatomy.
Professor Olabiyi noted that Bowen College of Health Sciences was built on one of the oldest Medical Centre in Nigeria, established in 1907 by the Nigerian Baptist Convention. He said the centre drew various health cases from the highest to lowest coming from Southwest, including Lagos State that the university’s students are exposed to in their training process.
“Academic stability, committed staff, and adequate teaching and research facilities/equipment distinguishes Bowen University College of Health Sciences from other medical training institutions in the country, in terms of quality products. We inculcate character and Godliness education into our medical training profession which may not be found in many other medical schools in the country,”he said.
Former Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, who presided over the programme, congratulated the new inductees for their brilliant performances in their MBBS final professional examinations.
He urged them to cherish the values that the university had instilled into their lives during the course of their studies; values of Godliness, Excellence, Entrepreneurship, Social responsibility and innovation.
“Embrace series of curiosity and never stop asking questions as you should make efforts to explore new research avenues and seek inter–disciplinary collaboration in the medical world. The world needs creativity and an innovative mind, an individual who can tackle health pressing challenges in our time from global pandemic to chronicle diseases. The university has fully equipped you to face the task in the health sector. Therefore, the world needs your expertise and commitment to make it better,” he said.
Speaking in the same vein at the occasion, the overall best medical graduating student, 2023 set, Dr Miss Odafen Praise described Bowen University College of Health Sciences as a welcome environment to learn. She said that the lecturers were approachable and student- friendly.
According to her, every student in the college has easy access to learning materials, teaching and research equipment/ facilities in the hospital. “Bowen University College of Health Sciences stands out among other universities in Nigeria in terms of Godliness and excellence,” she said.
Also, Dr ( Mrs) Sarah Odafen declared that Bowen University is a well organised institution of learning in Nigeria. According to her, all their graduating students have good reputations in their various workplaces. She said the aspect of Godliness and excellence education in Bowen University differentiated them among other Medical Doctors from other universities in the country.
Similarly, Rev Mrs Temilola Adewumi confirmed that Bowen University College of Health Sciences is one of the dependable medical colleges in Nigeria where the students are well motivated to believe in what God can do through them.
According to her, the students are motivated to prioritise the motto of Bowen University: Excellence and Godliness. They are motivated to be hardworking and to ensure that they continually strive to be better and more efficient medical practitioners in our contemporary changing world.
“The College must keep on improving every day to keep placing its graduates among the best in Nigeria,” she said.
