Gunmen attacked the Orieagu Market on Friday and killed one person, while several others were injured.
The Orieagu Market is located in Umuakagu Nsu, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.
It was gathered that the gunmen shot indiscriminately and forced traders and residents of the area to run helter-skelter.
A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that the attackers struck around 9.30pm.
On arrival, he said the gunmen opened fire, which caused panic in the area.
He said, “Gunmen on Friday attacked the Orieagu Market around 9.30pm. Their heavy shooting lasted about 30 minutes with one person confirmed dead, while others sustained bullet wounds.
“Nobody knew the reason for the attack; they shot indiscriminately without having a specific target. And fortunately, it was raining heavily during the attack; if not, there would have been more casualties.”
The police spokesperson in the state, Bala Elkana, said the attack had not been reported at any police station.
The attack was the latest in a series of attacks and killings currently going on in the state.
