Worried by the Appeal Court judgment that sacked six National Assembly members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State, supporters of the PDP in their thousands trooped out on Wednesday to protest the judgments.
The Nigerian Tribune learned that the supporters of the party, mostly youths in large numbers, blocked the Mararaban Jarma, the entry point to Jos, the state capital, to protest what they tagged as injustice and rape of democracy.
They carried placards with inscriptions such as “No room for political manipulation; let us protect our heritage; do not end our democracy; Plateau for PDP; our voices must be heard; Mr. President cautions the judiciary; and our land needs peace, among others”.
Reading a letter titled “An urgent need to salvage the judiciary from plunging into the arena of politics with total disregard for judicial precedents and stare decisis,” addressed to the National Judiciary Council (NJC), the chairman of Plateau Concerned Stakeholders, Yakubu Ibrahim, said the conflicting judgments by both the Tribunal and Court of Appeal depicted total disregard for the rule of law and tenets of democracy.
Yakubu called on the chairman of the NJC to constitute a commission inquiry into the nature of the failure of the Court of Appeal to follow judicial precedents.
According to him, the President of the Court of Appeal should immediately disband the Plateau State Election Appeal Court Panel and a new one should be constituted to hear the remaining appeals, as the current panel has shown manifest bias to unduly favour the APC candidates.
The concerned stakeholders further said that the patently prejudiced and inconsistent judgments of the panel already delivered in the appeals should also be subjected to judicial review, adding that these judgments were given without substantive and procedural jurisdiction.
There was also a similar protest at the Old Airport junction in the Jos South local government area of the state, but the protesters, mostly youths and PDP supporters, were dispersed by men of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH).
