A woman, Kemi Opebiyi, has told Grade A Customary Court, Oja Oba, Mapo, Ibadan, the Oyo State, that she is no longer interested in her union to her husband, Isaac Opebiyi on the grounds of irresponsibility, lack of trust and domestic violence.
Kemi added that Isaac was deceitful and that he told her many lies which truth she later found out.
The plaintiff said that she moved out of the defendant’s house after he accused her of transferring N60, 000 to her lover and threatened to cut her into pieces with a cutlass.
Kemi stated that she did not want to have anything to do with her husband again and therefore prayed the court to end their relationship.
She also pleaded for the custody of their children, but requested that the court mandate her husband to be responsible for their upkeep.
She lastly beseeched the court to stop her husband from having access to her private life.
Isaac did not show up in court although he was served court summonses.
Kemi in her evidence said, “My mother introduced my husband to me.
“I was just through with my secondary school education and planning to go for further studies in the university when we met.
“We started dating and unfortunately he impregnated me.
“I had no choice but to shed my plan of attending a university and moved in with him.
“No introduction or marriage ceremony held between us and he did not pay my bride price.
“My husband work in Ekiti State, but we live in Ibadan.
“Our marriage knew no peace because we fought every time he was around in Ibadan.
“He did not trust me and always accused me of being involved in extramarital activities.
“He would ask me to swear with the Bible that no one slept with me while he was not around.
“The more I tried to convince him about my innocence, the greater his mistrust of me.
“My husband is deceitful in nature and full of lies.
“He lied to me about his age while we were dating.
“I discovered he was 20 years older than me after we got married.
“He did not disclose to me that he was once married and had a child, until the child started coming to our home and sometimes stayed with us.
“Isaac is irresponsible.
“He started displaying this from the outset of our marriage.
“It was my mother who paid for my ante natal care during pregnancy and also shouldered many other responsibilities because my husband was never there.
“Isaac was cruel and violent. We hardly shared any moment of intimacy because he was in the habit of beating me.
“He forbade that I called or spoke with my parents on phone because he feared I could tell them of his maltreatment of me.
“He also sent back my relatives who came to visit me.
“He threatened to cut me into pieces with a cutlass last year after accusing me of transferring N60, 000 to my lover.
“I left his house after this.
“My lord, I do not want to have anything to do with my husband again, which was why I came to court for divorce.
“I pray this honourable court to grant me custody of our children, but make him responsible for their upkeep, giving feeding and education utmost priority.
“I want the court to also stop him from threatening or interfering with my private life.”
The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo adjourned the case till January 8, 2004, and ordered that a fresh hearing notice be issued and served the defendant.
