THE Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan has charged residents of Oyo State on the need to devote themselves to community service in order to achieve development at the local level.

Director of JDPC, Reverend Father Jerome Ajakaiye, gave the charge during the 2023 annual congress of the Civil Coalition for Good Governance (CCGG)  recently.

Ajakaiye, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mrs Adenike Ibitara, commended members in various local government areas across the state for their efforts at promoting good governance and holding government accountable to the people.

The director then encouraged members to invite more youths to the group in order to have more ‘eyes’ that monitor developmental issues at grassroots levels.

Earlier, the chairman of CCGG, Alhaji Amusa Ladiran, had commended members for their steadfastness in the outgoing year, just as he said they were able to monitor government projects across their local government areas.

Ladiran said the essence of the group is to look at pressing issues in the societies and look for ways to intervene by reaching out to various organs of government while being backed up by the JDPC.

He assured that the group would record huge progress in 2024 by further holding government accountable on its promises to the people.

During the congress, the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Salihu Abdulwaheed Adelabu, delivered a lecture on, ‘The State of Education (Basic and Post Primary) in Oyo State: Way Forward,’ where he highlighted the successes already recorded by the government  of Mr Seyi Makinde in the area of education.

Represented by the Deputy Director in the ministry, Mr Ibrahim Bola, the commissioner said to highlight the importance of education to the governor, the budget for the sector for 2024 is N90 billion, “which is also the highest for all the sectors.”
