The Kano State Government has confirmed the purchase of 41 ‘exotic’ sports utility vehicles (SUVs) valued at N68 million for members of the State House of Assembly.
Confirming the purchase of the utility vehicles, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, speaking through the Chief of Staff, Alhaji Shehu Wada Sagagi, said it is the right of the lawmakers to be provided with sound working vehicles.
Most of the lawmakers are said to have already taken possession of the SUVs, totaling about N2.6 billion.
The Chief of Staff said the governor, considering the economic situation, directed that the contractor understand the need to spread the payment over a period of time. He emphasized that the governor’s action is based on respect for the rights and obligations of all tiers of government.
He added that the governor remains committed to the well-being of every arm of government and the people of the state in general.

According to one of the lawmakers, who spoke to the press on condition of anonymity, the purchase of the SUVs is justified. The lawmaker said, “Why are you making a mountain out of a molehill over the purchase of new vehicles for lawmakers? Previous administrations in the state did the same thing,” he said in response to the controversy trailing the purchase of the vehicles.
When reminded that the situation is not the same considering the current economic challenges in the country, the lawmaker said, “Do you realize that the vehicles will facilitate our oversight functions and will be used for other legislative works?”
