As Nigeria grapples with the rising cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, following the removal of fuel subsidies, more car owners and transporters are turning to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cheaper and cleaner alternative.

While the financial benefits of CNG are undeniable at this critical moment in this country’s petroleum sector reforms, ensuring proper vehicle maintenance is essential for car owners to reap the rewards of its conversion fully.

CNG offers a significant reduction in fuel costs, lower carbon emissions, and decreased reliance on expensive petrol. However, maintaining a CNG-converted vehicle requires a bit more attention than traditional petrol engines. Here are ten critical tips for CNG-converted vehicle owners to keep their cars running safely and efficiently:

1. Regular Inspections

It is important to schedule regular checks for CNG system components, such as tanks, valves, and fittings. This helps to identify wear or damage early before it leads to serious issues.

2. Manufacturer Guidelines

Always adhere strictly to the maintenance schedules recommended by the manufacturer of your CNG conversion kit. This ensures that the system functions at peak efficiency and maintains any warranty coverage.

3. Check for Leaks

Regularly inspect the system for leaks. This can be done using soapy water or leak detectors. Leaks in the CNG system can pose serious safety risks, so prompt action is crucial if any are detected.

4. Keep Tanks Clean

Keeping the CNG tanks clean and free of dirt or debris is essential for safety. Ensure that no heavy or sharp objects are stored near the tanks to avoid damage.

5. Replace Filters

CNG filters should be replaced periodically to ensure smooth fuel flow and prevent contaminants from entering the engine, which could lead to costly repairs.

6. Monitor Pressure

Always keep an eye on the pressure levels within the CNG system. Abnormal pressure levels may indicate an underlying problem that requires immediate attention.

7. Use Certified Mechanics

Not all mechanics are equipped to handle the complexities of CNG systems. Always seek out certified CNG technicians to service your vehicle to avoid safety hazards or improper repairs.

8. Update Software (if applicable)

Some CNG systems come with electronic components or software that need to be regularly updated to maintain efficiency and compatibility with newer components.

9. Drive Regularly

Regular driving helps maintain the system’s functionality by keeping its components active. Long periods of idleness can lead to problems in the CNG system.

10. Educate Yourself

CNG-converted vehicle owners should always stay informed about their vehicle’s specific maintenance requirements. Keep track of new guidelines, recall notices, or updates from the manufacturer.

For many Nigerians, these steps are crucial in making the most of their CNG conversion as petrol prices continue to soar.

Meanwhile, Tribune Online reports that the Federal Government, in a bid to lessen the burden of the cost of conversion to CNG, launched a flexible payment plan aimed at making it more accessible for car owners across the country.

Speaking on the development, a representative from GoCNG.ng explained, “We understand that many Nigerians want to embrace CNG for its cost and environmental benefits but may be deterred by the upfront cost of conversion. Our new payment plan removes that barrier, providing a simple and affordable way for more people to make the switch.”
