A consumer rights advocate, and member, Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal, Mrs. Sola Salako-Ajulo, has stressed the need for stakeholders in the nation’s consumer advocacy space to sentisise Nigerians on the need to ensure their rights, as consumers, are not flouted, since a sizeable number are ignorant of such rights.
Ajulo, who made the remarks at The Industry Women Conference, held in Lagos recently, stated that consumerism would only work in Nigeria when the buying public is aware it has some rights that must be guided jealously.
She, however, lamented the fact that despite the increasing number of consumer advocacy groups, coming up on daily basis, many Nigerians have not availed themselves the opportunity to seek redress from those channels, despite having their rights, as consumers trampled on.
The founder of the Consumer Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria (CAFON) noted that apathy among consumers would only encourage brand custodians to be more brazen in their exploitation of Nigerian consumers.
She explained that her recent decision to publish the book, ‘Protect Yourself’ is designed to sensitive the consuming public in the country to some of the rights they have as consumers, and where they can get justice when such rights are trampled on.
Ajulo expressed the optimism that the 107-page book, which is being distributed free of charge at public functions, would go a long way in creating awareness among Nigerian consumers, since it contains how to make complaints and get results.
