1. Packages from Christmas

On Boxing Day, to keep the Christmas spirit alive and ensure that the less privileged can enjoy festive food, people give Christmas goodies and gifts to them as a form of goodwill. 2. Gifts for service providers

The wealthy Europeans had a tradition of giving money and other things to people who needed them. Other times, they also gave people who were service providers gifts, money, or food as a sign of gratitude.

Today, the same gestures are extended to community service workers, delivery drivers, cleaners, caregivers,, and people.

3. Food hampers and a basket of fruits

People give food hampers and fruit baskets as a show of kindness or gratitude on Boxing Day. The baskets sometimes contain fresh or cooked food, snacks, drinks, groceries, locally used items – chili pepper, pepper soup spice, and fresh fruits.

4. Discount on sales

Earlier, it was mentioned that Boxing Day is known for sales and this is common in many countries like Ireland, Canada, the UK, New Zealand. The reason why people would most likely get to buy things on a discount is because some stores usually want to dispose of leftover holiday goods ranging from clothing items, household items to electronics.

This happens to prevent spoilage or carryovers into the New Year. Besides, it feels good to be able to buy a lot of things at a cheaper price if compared with the original price.

5. Weather-friendly gifts

In countries like Canada, the UK, Australia, Boxing Day is a good time to give socks, gloves, scarves, ear muffs, head warmers, and coats on Boxing Day because they experience Winter and it’s usually cold around this period. These gifts are quite thoughtful and they are often deeply appreciated by the recipient.

6. Live Chicken, turkey, or goat

In some parts of Nigeria, these animals are given to friends and loved ones on Boxing Day as gifts for the festive holidays. These kinds of gifts are often perceived as thoughtful and they strengthen the bond between the giver and the receiver. For some families, it’s an addition to what they already have and for others, it’s a way to save money that could have been spent on getting one themselves.

It is also seen as a contribution to family celebrations or a show of wealth.

7. Money

One of the many gifts people receive on Boxing Day is money, especially when unsure of what the recipient would love. A lot of money goes into the festive holidays, so money is a thoughtful gift to give someone.

Other times, money could be given as donations to charity or end-of-the-year employee bonus.

Ultimately, the thought and gesture counts, regardless of the country or continent where you find yourself.
