Senator Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar, the former Governor of Zamfara State and current representative for Zamfara West Senatorial District, has launched the first phase of a housing reconstruction project for flood victims in Gummi town.

The project, aimed at rebuilding over 4,000 homes, was flagged off on December 25, 2024.

During his visit, Yari, who was represented by Hon. Muhammad Muttaka Rini, the Federal Commissioner for the National Population Commission in Zamfara State, assured the victims of his commitment to providing support for the rebuilding of their homes. The first phase of the project includes the distribution of 200 truckloads of cement (equivalent to 180,000 bags), 7,500 bundles of roofing zinc, and financial assistance to help victims start the rebuilding process.

The victims have been divided into three categories based on the size of their homes, with the first group consisting of 706 houses with 11-15 rooms, the second group having 7-9 rooms, and the third group comprising homes with 1-6 rooms. The total number of affected homes stands at 4,038.

In addition to the cement and cash assistance provided in phase one, the second phase will focus on distributing wood and roofing zinc to help complete the reconstruction. To ensure proper implementation of the project, a monitoring subcommittee, consisting of traditional rulers, security personnel, and other key stakeholders, has been established.

The Emir of Gummi, Justice Lawal Hassan (Rtd.), praised Senator Yari’s initiative, describing the reconstruction efforts as a clear example of responsive leadership. The Emir assured the project committee of his full support and collaboration in ensuring the successful reconstruction of the flood victims’ homes.

This initiative comes after the devastating flood in September 2024, which left many residents of Gummi homeless. In response, Senator Yari pledged to take personal responsibility for the reconstruction of the affected houses, demonstrating his dedication to the welfare of his constituents.
