Walmart has issued a recall of more than 12,000 cartons of its Great Value brand chicken broth over concerns about compromised packaging.

According to a release from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall involves 48-ounce containers of the broth, which may have “potential for packaging failures that could compromise the sterility of the product, resulting in spoilage.”

The recall, initiated on December 11 but published on the FDA’s website on January 8, affects 242 Walmart stores across nine states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.

A total of 2,023 cases were recalled, amounting to 12,138 cartons of chicken broth.

The affected products have a “best used by” date of March 25, 2026, and carry the UPC code “007874206684.”

In a statement to Fox News Digital, a Walmart spokesperson emphasised, “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority. As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all impacted products from the select, impacted stores. We are continuing to work with the supplier to investigate.”

The recall notice did not indicate whether any illnesses have been reported due to the consumption of the affected products. Consumers in possession of the recalled chicken broth are advised to discard it and contact Walmart for a full refund.

Unopened cartons of chicken broth can typically remain shelf-stable for years, according to Southern Living. However, once opened, leftover broth should be refrigerated for three to four days or frozen for up to two to three months, as advised by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Spoiled broth, identifiable by strange odours, discolouration, or mould, should never be consumed, as it can cause food poisoning.
