The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has called for a paradigm shift in the training of students in tertiary institutions, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing practical skills acquisition over solely relying on academic certificates.

Tunji-Ojo made this statement on Wednesday when he received the management team of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, led by the Acting Rector, Adegun Olorunwa, in Abuja.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Babatunde Alao, Tunji-Ojo stressed that Nigeria must shift its focus from being a country that prioritizes certificate holders to one that values innovation and technical skills.

He said, “Regarding careers, Nigeria is a country of certificate holders, not a country of skills. We carry certificates, and there is a need to come up with innovative ideas.”

“Beyond advocacy, we must be scientific. As a matter of fact, it is about doing research and identifying areas of weakness. And most importantly, it is about recognizing needs.”

Tunji-Ojo urged the academic world to remain focused and “develop innovative ideas” that are creative and competitive on the global stage.

“Our tertiary institutions must delve deeper into global products and projects and inspire students in that direction. Look at the Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerbergs, and Elon Musks of this world. Study their strategies and develop a standard curriculum to spark ideas in our youngsters,” he said.

“We have schools of agriculture. I believe they should focus on all aspects of agriculture. As for our tertiary institutions, we should be focusing on technology, research, and development.”

On technology and innovation, Tunji-Ojo reiterated the need to “understand the division of labor,” as well as “build idea hubs and clusters for success relevant to emerging demands.”

During the visit, the Acting Rector expressed appreciation to the Minister for his scholarly approach, insights, and support, while also recalling how the Minister facilitated projects during his tenure as Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission.

Olorunwa also briefed the Minister on the career service center at the institution. The visit was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, and other top officials of the ministry.
