The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to training and equipping Nigerian students with essential digital skills required to function effectively in the digital space as well as become globally competitive.

Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, stated this during the inauguration of the new National Executive Officers or National Association of University Students (NAUS) held in Abuja.

The Minister, who was represented by Kaka Balarabe, emphasized the importance of skill acquisition and assured the students that his administration would prioritize equipping Nigerian students at all levels with relevant skills needed to drive national development.

He charged the students to embrace digital literacy to remain relevant in today’s world of work.

“We are in the information and digital age. Digital literacy is one of the key pillars of the Federal Ministry of Education under the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa. Every Nigerian student should have basic digital device skills,” Balarabe stated.

The event with the theme, “Transforming the Mentality of University Students Through Digital Skills, Cybersecurity, and Entrepreneurship,” brought together students, dignitaries, and key stakeholders.

Present at the inauguration were Executive Secretary of TETFUND, Sonny S.T, Echono; Representative of the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, Kaka Balarabe; NAUS, National President, Josiah Peter Oche; students, and other distinguished guests.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of an award of excellence to Student Energy in recognition of its unwavering commitment to student welfare, skill acquisition, and the promotion of green skills among Nigerian students.

Student Energy is a Canadian-based, youth-led global non-profit organization dedicated to educating, empowering, and uniting young people working in the clean energy sector.

With a network of over 50,000 young people across 120 countries, Student Energy provides programmes and resources to accelerate the global transition to a sustainable and equitable energy future.

Global Community Manager, Student Energy, Piper Stump, articulated the organization’s vision “Our Theory of Change identifies our ultimate goal as building a just, equitable, and sustainable clean energy future. We achieve this by developing programs focused on community building, energy education, capacity development, and creating platforms for youth to shape their energy future,” he said.

“We also recognize and appreciate the leadership team of the National Association of University Students (NAUS) for their tireless efforts in representing and advocating for post-secondary students across Nigeria. Your work continues to lead youth toward a more equitable, sustainable future while upholding academic integrity,”

Piper also acknowledged the efforts of Moses Alalade, who serves as Student Energy President in the Nigeria Global Chapters Network, “We would like to recognize the hard work of Moses Alalade for his contributions to Student Energy and as a Newly Elected Executive member of the National Association of University Students (NAUS) in his position as National Exofficio 1.

“We support his efforts to empower his community and inspire future clean energy leaders,” he stated.
