“The significant achievements so far recorded in the areas of safety, security, infrastructure development, passenger facilitation, and stakeholder collaboration, among others have not only strengthened the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria’s (FAAN) operations, but have also positioned the organization as a pivotal force in Nigeria’s aviation sector.”
These were the words of the Director of Special Duties at the Authority, Mr Henry Agbebire, while reviewing the one year of its Managing Director, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku.
While describing safety and security as the bedrock of aviation, the director acknowledged how Kuku’s administration has prioritized ensuring that the country’s airports meet and surpass the global standards. Agbebire cited how both Lagos and Abuja airports for example underwent recertification by the Nigeria Civik Aviation Authority (NCAA) which reaffirmed their compliance with the international safety protocols.
According to Agbebire “One of the critical focus areas of the past year has been the modernisation of airport infrastructure to meet the demands of a growing aviation industry,”
Key projects embarked upon in the last one year under the FAAN MD include: upgrade to terminal buildings, runways, and other critical facilities, while a standout achievement was the recent commissioning of upgraded facilities at MMIA Terminal 1, including the innovative E-Wing toilets, which set a new standard for quality and sustainability in airport infrastructure.
Also worthy of mentions according to the director, was the implementation of measures to enhance the travel experience for passengers, automation of check-in processes, real-time passenger information systems, and improved customer feedback mechanisms which have significantly streamlined airport operations.
These initiatives, Agbebire said have reduced wait times, improved efficiency, and enhanced overall passenger satisfaction.
His words: “Collaboration with stakeholders has been another hallmark of Kuku’s tenure. Engagements with airlines, regulatory agencies, and other key players in the aviation ecosystem have fostered partnerships aimed at addressing industry challenges and exploring opportunities for growth. These collaborations have been instrumental in creating a more cohesive and efficient aviation sector.
“Under Kuku’s leadership, FAAN has undertaken a cultural transformation aimed at fostering professionalism and accountability among staff. The FAAN Acculturation Programme has reoriented employees towards a shared vision of operational excellence. This cultural shift has enhanced teamwork, improved service delivery, and strengthened the organization’s reputation.
“Kuku’s administration has also championed innovation and sustainability, integrating environmentally friendly practices into airport operations and infrastructure development. By embracing technology and sustainable solutions, FAAN has positioned itself to address current challenges while preparing for future demands.
“Recognizing the importance of human capital, Kuku has prioritized training and capacity-building programs for FAAN staff. These initiatives have equipped employees with the skills and knowledge needed to deliver on the Authority’s mandate effectively, ensuring that FAAN remains competitive in a dynamic global aviation industry.”
Reflecting on the achievements of the past year, the director said it was clear that Kuku’s leadership has set a solid foundation for FAAN’s continued growth and development. The strides made in safety, infrastructure, passenger facilitation, and stakeholder engagement are testaments to a commitment to excellence and innovations. Moving forward, FAAN is poised to build on these successes, addressing emerging challenges and leveraging opportunities to further enhance its role in Nigeria’s aviation sector and beyond.”
