Uneasy calm have pervaded the zonal office of West African Examination Council (WAEC) in Lagos state following the discovery of a syndicate group working with politicians for money.
The painstaking discovery followed weeks of intense investigation by the management of the examination body over conflicting results confirmation for persons contrary to what is obtainable in the official records of the Council
Our Correspondent who got wind of the bursting of the three man syndicate operating in the Lagos zonal office of the body gathered that they have already confessed to have collected the sum of #2million naira as initial deposit from one Akan Okon a governorship aspirant in Akwa ibom state to issue conflicting statement to get Mr Umo Eno the PDP governorship candidate disqualified by the Court.
The syndicate according to a senior staff of the Council who pleaded anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter said Mr Okon who came a distant second with 3 votes in the primaries that threw up Umo Eno as PDP candidate told the crooks that once Umo Eno is sacked ,he will become the candidate and next governor of Akwa ibom state.
The Men who have been arrested and presently being interrogated by the police according to the source were also promised lucrative contracts from Akwa ibom state government under Akan Okon as governor and a house each in Lagos or any state of their choice.
The staff who vowed to give relevant information and testimonies when the time comes revealed that Mr Akan Okon in desperation to get WAEC aid his governorship ambition had earlier gone to Ghana Headquarters of the body to seal the deal but met a brick wall.
According to him, ”He stormed the Lagos head office with money but could not get an accomplice before opting for the zonal office where he met desparate young men who chose to sacrifice their budding career for filthy lucre”.
” They are there to explain to police on how they sealed the dirty deal that tends to drag the hard earned reputation of the Council on the mud, we are under pressure every election period from politicians planning to undue one another and we have warned our staff to be watchful and very careful to avoid being caught on the corrupt web of these desperadoes, now they are singing like birds pleading for mercy”.
The senior management staff who said that the identity of the rogues will soon be made public soon noted that doing so outrightly while investigation is ongoing may mar the successful conduct of the investigation.
” We are talking about a syndicate group and many more people may be involved thus there is ongoing discrete investigation and apart from the three people, more people may be invited to explain their role in the exposed fraud”.
Mr Akan Okon who have served as a commissioner in the Akwa ibom state government for about nine years resigned to contest the governorship candidate of PDP in the last guber primaries.
Since his inability to defeat the incumbent candidate in the contest held at the next of champions, Okon has embarked on endlessly petition writing as his plan b to get the coveted slot. Continue Reading
