The Presidency has refuted allegations made by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) that President Bola Tinubu broke a promise to keep fuel prices stable.
Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, a media aide to the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, dismissed the NLC’s claims as “dirty politics,” asserting that no such promise was made during discussions with labour leaders.
Abdulaziz, who was reportedly present at two meetings between President Tinubu and labour leaders regarding minimum wage negotiations, clarified that there was no mention of a fuel price hike as part of any agreement.
“I sat through the two meetings President @officialABAT had with Labour leaders on minimum wage. At neither of the meetings was an offer made in exchange for a fuel price hike. Ajaero is once again playing his dirty politics with the emotions of Nigerians,” Abdulaziz tweeted.
The NLC had accused President Tinubu of betraying the trust of Nigerians by increasing fuel prices despite an alleged promise to maintain stability.
According to the labour union, a crucial condition for accepting the N70,000 national minimum wage was a guarantee that fuel prices would not rise.
However, Abdulaziz strongly refuted these claims, emphasising that no such promise was made by the President.
The NLC, in response to the recent fuel price hike, has expressed its disapproval, labelling the increase a betrayal of trust.
The union has demanded the reversal of the fuel price hike, an end to the crackdown on protesters, and a halt to what it perceives as the encroachment on the duties of the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
