Anambra State Governor’s wife and founder of the non-governmental organisation, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has appealed to parents to make their children available for the ongoing statewide polio vaccination programme across the state.

Mrs Soludo, who stated this in a statement released in Awka, said that the success of the exercise is in the hands of all stakeholders, especially parents whose children and wards fall within the age brackets of zero to fifty-nine months.

Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, in partnership with the state’s Ministry of Health and partners, announced over the weekend what it called Outbreak Response 2, OBR2, against Circulating Variant Polio Virus Type 2, cVPV2, infection.

The statement stated that the vaccination exercise, covering all the twenty-one local government areas of Anambra State, would be conducted using the novel oral polio vaccine, nOPV2, in line with global recommendations.

The exercise begins on Saturday, November 11, and ends on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. It is for children between zero and five-ninth months, irrespective of their previous immunisation status.

Mrs Soludo, who explained that the vaccination programme is vital for both prevention and curbing the spread of the virus, pointed out that every child in the state who is eligible should receive the polio vaccine.

The Anambra Governor’s wife, who is a Rotary Polio Ambassador, also urged parents, guardians, heads of schools, religious leaders, and community leaders, among other stakeholders, to allow children under their care to be vaccinated.

She further stressed that if any child under the age of fifteen suddenly develops weakness in one or two legs or arms, parents and guardians of the child should report immediately to the nearest health centre or to the immunisation officers.
