The organizers of the Bayelsa State Governor’s Football Tournament christened the Prosperity Cup have expressed their delight over the re-election of Governor Douye Diri.
Governor Diri polled 175,196 votes to defeat his closest rival, Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 110,108 votes while the Labour Party polled 905 votes.
The organizers in a statement by the Director General of the tournament, Mr. Ono Akpe, said, “Saturday’s election victory was a referendum on the excellent performance of the prosperity administration.”
According to him, the victory presents another opportunity for the state to continue to consolidate on the gains made over the years in sports and youth development, peace, security and stability.
Mr. Akpe noted that the tremendous achievement of the administration in sports in the last three years where the state finished second at the National Sports Festival in Benin City, Edo State surpassing the record in Asaba, Delta State, won both the male and female trophies of the AITEO CUP in the same year, sportsmen and women excelling at other national, continental and global competitions in basketball, table-tennis, chess, wrestling, athletics, handball and boxing was indicative of the administration’s commitment to sports.
The statement further expressed joy at the prospect of more youths in Bayelsa State having the opportunity to showcase their skills outside the state through the Prosperity Cup and the engagement of foreign scouts by the government.
He commended the people of Bayelsa State for their unflinching loyalty to and support for the PDP, assuring that Governor Diri will deliver more projects for the people in his second tenure.
The DG explained that the re-election victory of Governor Douye Diri and his Deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, was a reflection of the will of the people, thanking the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for displaying uprightness in ensuring that the true results that emanated from the units were duly collated.
Mr Akpe said the mandate of the governor was renewed by the electorate in the state because the governor has given a good account of his administration’s commitment towards the development of the State, especially the construction of the three senatorial roads.
