United States President, Donald Trump, has reiterated his belief that Canada should be absorbed into the United States, arguing that the country is financially dependent on American support.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday, Trump claimed that the U.S. spends hundreds of billions of dollars subsidising Canada without any justification.
He asserted that America does not need Canadian resources, as it has abundant energy, manufacturing capabilities, and lumber.
According to him, without U.S. support, Canada would struggle to function as a viable country.
Trump suggested that making Canada the 51st state would bring benefits such as lower taxes, stronger military protection, and the elimination of tariffs.
He wrote, “We pay hundreds of Billions of Dollars to SUBSIDIZE Canada. Why? There is no reason. We don’t need anything they have. We have unlimited Energy, should make our own Cars, and have more Lumber than we can ever use. Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable Country. Harsh but true!
“Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada — AND NO TARIFFS!“
This is not the first time he has expressed this view. In January, he revived the idea of a U.S.-Canada merger following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement of his resignation.
The development comes a few days after Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, on Saturday, announced retaliatory tariffs against the United States in response to Trump’s newly imposed tariffs on Canadian imports.
