The Nigeria Civil Society Central Coordinating Council (NCSCC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recall Imo State Resident Electoral Officer (REC), Professor Sylvia Agu, over allegations of non-declaration of results of the Imo State Assembly election.
In a statement signed by its coordinator, Mr Obed Agu, the group expressed concern that INEC leadership has not allowed the winners of the election to be declared, despite the fact that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Accord Party scored the highest votes in both local government areas.
According to the NCSCC, ward-by-ward results for the Ideato North House of Assembly election, declared by INEC at the polling units and uploaded into the INEC server, showed that PDP candidate Kanayo Nwankwo was the winner.
However, some imposters made an illegal, criminal announcement that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was the winner. Similarly, for Ideato South, ward-by-ward results declared by INEC showed that the Accord Party candidate, Vitalis Azodo, won. Still, some imposters also made an illegal, criminal announcement that APC is now the winner.
The NCSCC insisted that the INEC Chairman owes Nigeria a duty to immediately recall the Imo REC from Owerri and send an independent team of INEC senior staff to resolve the issue, as Ideato North and South serve as a test case.
The group called for the REC to be recalled for her “criminal involvement and obstruction of credible elections,” stressing that this is the only way to prove that the headquarters is not part of the “shameful electoral outing” in Imo State.
