The former Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Peter Okebukola, has emphasised the significant potential of Nigerian cultural fabrics to drive economic empowerment, particularly among young people.

Okebukola noted that such initiatives serve as a vital link between cultural heritage and modern entrepreneurship.

Speaking at a Cultural Fabric Entrepreneurship Programme in Lagos the professor stressed the need for young people to acquire skills in traditional art, adding that it empowers the next generation to leverage Nigeria’s rich cultural wealth for global relevance.

By doing so, Okebukola, who was represented by Dr Franklin Onowugbeda, said young people can become custodians of their heritage while contributing meaningfully to economic growth.

He spoke on the theme: “Harnessing Cultural Fabrics for Entrepreneurial Success.”

“The rich tapestry of Nigerian cultural fabrics holds immense potential not just for artistic expression but also for economic empowerment. Programmes like this serve as a bridge between our traditions and the modern entrepreneurial landscape, empowering young people to become custodians of our heritage while contributing meaningfully to economic growth.

“This initiative is not just about bag-making; it is about equipping the next generation to harness our cultural wealth for global relevance.” Professor Okebukola said.

The convener of the programme, Dr Onowugbeda, noted that the programme is a celebration of cultural diversity and a call to action for young people to take pride in their heritage while leveraging it for entrepreneurial success.

He said: “The skills gained here are not just for personal economic empowerment but also for the preservation of our shared humanity through culture. We are equipping students to become global ambassadors of our heritage while fostering unity through understanding and collaboration.”

The hands-on workshops, led by skilled artisans, provided participants with practical training in crafting unique bags from Ankara and Aso Oke fabrics.
