Former minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has attributed the recent wave of defections into the ruling All Progressives Congress to the need for protection over alleged corruption cases.
Speaking on Tuesday during an interview with Channels Television, Dalung said that only Nigerians can decide such if an elected officeholder should defect to a new party.

INFORMATION NIGERIA reports that the former minister’s statement is coming, following a recent massive defection from Peoples Democratic Party, Delta State chapter, led by ex-governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

It was gathered that the state’s Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, also collapsed his structure and joined the APC, saying that the defection was in the interest of the oil-rich state.
Reacting to the development on Tuesday, Mr. Dalung, disagreed with the governor, saying that most opposition group members are leaving due to the pressure mounted on them by Economic and Financial Crime Commission.

He said: “The wave of defections or the gale of defections of the political elites who are repositioning themselves either for survival, protection, or evasion of prosecution cannot be taken seriously by students of Nigerian politics.
“In defection, it is the people who brought you into power that will decide that they are not satisfy with the political platform, either by internal democracy or the party’s leadership.
“Some of these defectors are leaving due to the corrupt cases hanging on their necks, if you have skeleton in your cupboard, you can migrate immediately.”
