The Governor of Oyo state, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday, urged Corps members posted to the state to endeavour to develop their host communities.

Governor Makinde stated this during the closing ceremony of the 2024 batch ‘B’ stream two orientation programme at the permanent orientation camp, Ogbakuta, Iseyin.

Represented by the Oyo state commissioner of youth and sports, Wosilat Adegoke, the governor assured the Corps members of his determination to address their welfare needs.

“I want to assure you that government will not relent in its efforts at addressing your welfare needs and ensuring your safety wherever you are posted.

“I urge you to pay special attention to the development of your host communities by identifying viable projects that will positively impact on the lives of our people,” Makinde said.

Furthermore, he tasked the Corps members to acquire relevant skills for personal development and societal improvement.

Makinde stated, “This is quite an interesting moment for you to look back at all the activities that you have been engaged in and focus on the lessons and the skills acquired and how to apply them for the improvement of the society during service year and beyond.

“I have no doubt in my mind that the various trainings you have passed through would be of great value to you in your life’s journey.

“There are equally hundreds of areas you can apply combinations of energy, education, skills and zeal to make a huge success story in the not too distant future. I enjoin you to ponder seriously on this in the remaining eleven months of your service. It is my expectation that at the end of your service year, you will tend towards job creation rather than job seeking.”

Also, the governor enjoined the Corps members to be patroits of the nation and good ambassadors of their states, saying “I equally remind you that as patriots in service, we must all join hands to build a stronger, more united, peaceful and democratic nation. Therefore it is imperative that you do not isolate yourself from the overall objectives of the founding fathers of the NYSC Scheme. Let the motto of NYSC which is “Service and humility” be your guiding principle.”

Earlier, the Oyo state, NYSC coordinator, Odoba Abel tasked local government authorities to partner with the scheme on the development of communities through various community development programmes.

Odoba said, “I would like to appeal to the Local Government Authorities to seize the opportunity provided by the Scheme through the Community Development Programme by sponsoring projects identified by Corps Members so that host communities can derive maximum benefits from what they have to offer.

“On our own part as the managers of the Scheme, we will keep challenging the Corps Members to identify and execute tangible projects in their localities. However, such projects should receive financial support of the host local government and members of such communities.”

He, therefore, urged the Corps members to strive and be committed to their duties, remain law abiding and accept challenges that would give them an edge in life.
