The Edo Renaissance Group has endorsed the appointment of Dr. Femi Adekanmbi as the Managing Director of the Benin Owena River Basin Development Authority (BORBDA), dismissing ongoing protests as unnecessary and potentially divisive.
In a statement issued by its Chairman, John Aghaleladia, and Secretary, Kingsley Aigbe, the group declared that Adekanmbi’s appointment was not only justified but also aligned with the principles of fairness and equity. They emphasized that an Edo State indigene, Engr. Saliu Osifuemhe Ahmed, had already served two consecutive terms totaling eight years, making it appropriate for another state—Ondo, in this case—to take the mantle of leadership.
“This is About Equity, Not Exclusion”
“We urge protesters to reconsider their stance and recognise that Adekanmbi’s appointment does not undermine Edo State’s interests. Rather, it upholds a fair system where leadership opportunities are shared among states,” the group stated.
Appealing for calm, the group urged aggrieved individuals to look beyond ethnic sentiments and focus on the broader benefits of regional development.
The Edo Renaissance Group also issued a stern warning against allowing the protests to be hijacked by political actors with hidden agendas.
“Let us not be used by politicians for their selfish gains. It is important to understand that by law, the BORBDA headquarters is not bound to remain in Benin—it could be relocated to Akure or elsewhere. Those protesting must realize that the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare II, does not make federal appointments. That power rests solely with the President. A recommendation letter does not equate to an automatic appointment,” the group asserted.
“Let’s Focus on Development, Not Distractions”
The group called on all stakeholders to rally behind Adekanmbi’s leadership, emphasizing that unity, fairness, and justice should remain the guiding principles in governance.
“We must resist the temptation to divide ourselves along ethnic lines. Instead, let us work together for the growth of our region and the nation as a whole,” the statement concluded.
