Nigerians are urging the government and private grassroots philanthropy to work together to address the needs of vulnerable populations.

This call was made by Muyideen Okunlola Kayode, a social entrepreneur, and philanthropist, during a keynote speech at the Strategic Media Seminar organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Sobi FM Chapel.

Kayode emphasised the importance of bridging the gap between government social investment programs and private grassroots philanthropy.

He noted that private philanthropy plays a crucial role in supporting social development but often operates in isolation from government programmes.

“This is where private grassroots philanthropy comes in. Private grassroots philanthropy refers to the voluntary giving of time, money, and resources by individuals, organizations, and communities to support social causes. In Nigeria, private grassroots philanthropy has been instrumental in filling the gaps left by government programmes,” he said.

The media was tasked with playing a critical role in raising awareness, facilitating collaboration, and holding stakeholders accountable.

Kayode’s philanthropic foundation, MOK Foundation, has provided assistance to over 29,000 people in Kwara over the last 18 months.
