A new deal in the management of environment may be witnessed by Nigerians in the 2025 fiscal year, as the Ministry of Environment has proposed a whopping N39bn for “tree planting”.
Figures from the budget proposal by the ministry seeking the approval of the national assembly showed the highest amount ever made or planned for investment on tree planting.
With a figure of N39,377,900,541, (Thirty-Nine Billion, Three Hundred and Seventy-Seven Million, Nine Hundred Thousand, Five Hundred and One Naira), the planned investment by the ministry for tree planting is the highest ever, surpassing the total budget for environmental preservation for the past six years.
Tribune can authoritatively state that the investment for preservation of the environment in the last six years stood at N23,288,688,846 (Twenty Three Billion, Two Hundred and Eighty-Eight Million, Six Hundred and Eighty-Eight Thousand, Eight Hundred and Forty-Six Naira only.
While the cumulative figure for tree planting in the last six years stood at N4,135,074,189 (Four Billion, One Hundred and Thirty-Five Million, Seventy-Four Thousand, One Hundred and Eighty Nine Naira only. It represents 11% of expenditure compared to the proposed investment for tree planting in 2025 fiscal year alone.
Checks by Tribune also reveal that the proposed amount is an increment of N35,242,826,352 (Thirty-Five Billion, Two Hundred and Forty-Two Million, Eight Hundred and Twenty-Six Thousand Three Hundred and Fifty-Two Naira) which represents an 89% increment in investment in one year compared to the past six years.
The move is part of a measure to swell the carbon credit of the nation towards meeting its nationally determined Contribution (NDC) to reduce greenhouse gasses generated in the country.
