Benedict Alabi, former Deputy Governor of Osun State, has formally announced his intention to run for the 2026 governorship election.
The announcement was made on Friday during a special service at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church in Ile-Ife, where Alabi reaffirmed his resolve to seek the state’s highest office.
His declaration adds a new dynamic to the ongoing political conversations surrounding the 2026 election.

Alabi’s decision to enter the race coincides with increasing calls from within the APC in Osun for the governorship ticket to be zoned to the Osun West Senatorial District.
Many party members from the region have intensified their advocacy for the zoning of the ticket, particularly in the event that former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola does not seek re-election.
Speaking about his candidacy, Alabi expressed his confidence in his chances of winning, stressing his commitment to the state’s progress and development.
His official announcement marks one of the first significant moves in the buildup to what is expected to be a highly competitive election season.
“We shall emerge victorious by God’s grace. Our goal is to work towards the advancement of our dear state and uplift the lives of our people,” he said on Friday.
Additionally, Alabi appealed to both the Catholic community and the general public to continue praying for Nigeria, calling the country a spiritual homeland. “Nigeria is the Jerusalem for Nigerians. I want to encourage families to come together for the progress of our nation,” he said.
Alabi’s declaration marks the beginning of what will likely be a tense and competitive political race leading up to the 2026 elections.
