The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has awarded the Head of Department of Mass Communication of the Federal Polytechnic Offa, Mr. Wole Alawode as an ‘Individual Giant of Honour.’
The award was presented by NAPS’ executives in his office on
Friday 4th of February 2022, was in recognition of his crusade against sex for grade and many other campaigns that have been a menace to tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Vice President of NAPS, Comrade Lawal Nurufaida while presenting the award commended the HOD for championing different campaigns year-in-year out on issues of public interest. He urged the institution to put more effort into leading good courses to rescue Nigerian institutions from social vices like sex for a grade, drug abuse, rape among others.
An executive of NASS, Comrade Adebayo Kayode Joshua reiterated Mr. Alawode’s efforts by promoting the image of the Mass Communication Department and that of the Polytechnic through a series of campaigns that captured the media attention.
Speaking about the campaign on ‘Say No To Sex For Grade’ he said, “the fact is that, this is happening in our institutions. A lot of our students are victims of sexual abuse but can not come out to report their experiences.” He, however, enjoined other HoDs, Deans, Directors, and staff in all institutions across the nation to emulate the Federal Polytechnic Offa to eradicate moral decadence among staff and students.
In his response, Mr. Alawode appreciated the NASS and NAPS executives for the honor and accolades. He disclosed that the success recorded on say no to sex for a grade would not have been achieved without the relentless support of the Management of the Polytechnic; staff and students of the Mass Communication Department.
He opined that if the management of Universities, Polytechnics, including NANS and NAPS can work together, they would change the narrative of the country.
In the same development, the executives of NAPS also paid a courtesy visit to the office of the Acting Rector, Dr. Olarongbe Afolabi who appreciated them and congratulated the Mass Communication Department for the well-deserved award.
He enjoined the HoD to keep up the good work and assured him of the Management’s continual support.
