Pat Uwaje-King is one of the creative gospel ministers around. In this interview, with SEYI SOKOYA, the lead singer of the gospel music group Midnight Crew discusses her life and career, highlighting the impact she has had on the gospel music scene.

ALTHOUGH you are well-known as a member of a famous gospel group, you have recently moved to the United Kingdom. What prompted this decision?

I always prioritize my family in everything I do. Music is a global language, and as a music minister with over two decades of professional experience, I can sing and attend concerts anywhere. I needed a platform and an environment to fulfill my destiny, and that is why I relocated. However, Nigeria will always be home to me, as I have contributed to the music industry and had many wonderful experiences there.

Nigerian gospel music is evolving in a new direction. What is your opinion on this new wave?

The Nigerian gospel music scene is undergoing an exciting transformation, characterized by a fusion of traditional African sounds, contemporary music, and global styles. This new wave is defined by various influences, including Afrobeat, soul, jazz, and even pop, all intertwined with the vibrant essence of Nigerian worship and praise. Gospel ministers are expanding the reach of gospel music not only within Nigeria but also on the global stage, as their work resonates with audiences far beyond West Africa.

Key characteristics of this evolution include cross-genre fusion, which adds diversity global appeal, and recognition for our musicians. The live worship culture has also been enhanced, along with improved production quality and visuals. Additionally, the lyrical depth and variety have increased, along with intentional marketing strategies fueled by social media and digital platforms.

This new wave of Nigerian gospel music signifies a powerful evolution of the genre. It blends innovation with tradition, broadening its impact while continuing to uplift, inspire, and connect deeply with audiences both in Nigeria and around the world.

What inspired you to start your journey in gospel music?

I began my journey in gospel music at an early age while growing up in a Christian household, where I was surrounded by music and a vibrant church community. Initially, I became involved in church choirs and music groups, which laid the foundation for my passion for gospel music. My commitment to the genre deepened when I co-founded the gospel music group Midnight Crew in 2001 with other talented musicians. The group became known for its dynamic and contemporary approach to gospel music, blending African rhythms with traditional gospel themes.

My inspiration to focus on gospel music stems from my desire to spread a message of hope, faith, and encouragement. For me, gospel music is not just a career; it is a ministry through which I can connect with audiences on a spiritual level, offering inspiration and uplifting messages. Through my music, I aim to inspire people and share my faith, a calling that resonates deeply with my personal beliefs and life purpose.

Can you describe the unique qualities of your voice or performance style that distinguish you in the gospel music industry?

My voice has a rich, powerful quality that allows me to convey deep emotion and connect with listeners on a personal and spiritual level. I’ve been blessed with a vocal range that can handle both the dynamic highs and soulful depths that gospel music often requires, making my performances heartfelt and impactful.

One thing that distinguishes me in the gospel music industry is my ability to blend traditional African rhythms with contemporary gospel. This fusion not only adds an authentic, vibrant feel to my music but also bridges cultural and spiritual boundaries, allowing a wide audience to relate to the message. My performance style is equally energetic and spirit-filled—when I sing, my goal is to create an experience that feels like worship, drawing people into a space where they can truly connect with God.

I am also known for my versatility, being able to lead powerful praise sessions as well as intimate worship moments, which resonate with diverse audiences across generations. Every time I perform, I want people to feel uplifted and encouraged, bringing them a message of hope through the power of gospel music.

How has it impacted your perspective on the gospel?

I studied Creative Arts at the University of Lagos in Nigeria, majoring in Theatre Arts. I also had the opportunity to attend Rhema Bible College. While I don’t have extensive formal training in music education, much of my knowledge has come from years of hands-on experience within the church and the gospel music community. Being involved in church choirs from a young age provided me with a solid foundation in vocal control, harmony, and the spiritual nuances of gospel music. This practical, faith-driven training has shaped my voice and refined my approach to gospel music, emphasizing authenticity, emotional depth, and spiritual connection.

Furthermore, being part of Midnight Crew has contributed to my professional development. Collaborating with other talented musicians in the group has allowed me to experiment with blending African rhythms and contemporary gospel, broadening my stylistic range and enriching my musical identity. This real-world experience has been invaluable, giving me a deep understanding of both the technical and spiritual dimensions of gospel music.
