Democrats Abroad, an international campaign organization, has explained how they are working to ensure that no American, especially those who live far from home, miss the chance to vote with just over a week left until the election.
Democrats Abroad, the official branch of the Democratic National Committee, supports and interacts with American residents abroad. Eight Democrats Abroad delegates, chosen from various parts of the world, make up the DNC’s 447 members.
According to the Federal Voting Assistance Program, approximately 2.8 million of the approximately 4.4 million US citizens who were living abroad in 2022 are eligible to vote. However, many others, such as students studying overseas and digital nomads, will be out of the country for next week’s election, as Democrats Abroad global press secretary, Sharon Manitta, pointed out.
“We do everything we can, in every mode we can, to try and find those Americans and let them know they have the right to vote. Because so many people don’t realise that even if you live outside the US, you still have the right to vote,” she stated.
In London, volunteers dedicated their weekend to distributing cards and encouraging Americans to exercise their voting rights. This year, they have also engaged with Americans at farmers’ markets in areas with large populations of US citizens and outside international NFL games.
Despite being affiliated with the Democratic Party, Manitta emphasised that the organization is “here to help anybody who is outside the US who is having trouble voting. We will help anybody of any political persuasion vote. We feel really strongly about that.”
