Nigerian Afrobeats singer, Adedamola Adefolahan, better known as Fireboy DML, has revealed that he was on the verge of becoming a petty trader, despite holding a bachelor’s degree, before he was signed to YBNL Nation by the renowned rapper and music executive Olamide.
Fireboy, who joined the label in 2018, revealed that he had plans to start selling rechargeable lamps under Ajah Bridge in Lagos before he received his recording deal.

The ‘Peru’ hitmaker shared this in a recent episode of the 90s Baby Show in London, United Kingdom, which was posted on X on Saturday.

He mentioned that he had already been selling pepper soups at a local joint but was looking to switch businesses.
The singer said, “Thank God for that [Olamide signing me]. I was considering selling rechargeable lamps. I met one guy under Ajah Bridge, he was telling me about the business and I told him I was interested.
“To me, at the time, it was more dignified. At least, people will sell you a lamp seller but selling pepper soup is crazy, bro. My parents didn’t know I was doing menial jobs. It was crazy but now, we thank God.”
He also disclosed that he was signed via WhatsApp.
Fireboy DML rose to prominence when his single “Jealous” was part of YBNL Nation’s 2018 album, YBNL Mafia Family, marking his breakthrough.
In 2019, Fireboy DML dropped his debut studio album, Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps, which helped solidify his status as a star.
