Atiku Galadima – Maiduguri

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued certificates of return to Borno Governor-elect Babagana Umara Zulum, his deputy Umar Kadafur and 28 members of the House of Assembly in the State.

Presenting the certificate of return to Zulum at Sir. Kashim Hall in Maiduguri on Thursday, the INEC National Commissioner in charge of Borno, Yobe and Bauchi, Major General Madibbo Alkali (rtd), said the mission of the commission is to serve as an independent body to ensure free, fair and acceptable elections for the support of democracy in Nigeria.

According to him, as a regulatory body, INEC has no political party or candidate and it will partner with all stakeholders both locally and internationally to build sustainable electoral process in Nigeria.

He noted that issuing the certificate of return to Zulum and other elected members was in line with Constitutions of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended and electoral act which mandated INEC to issue certificate of return within 14 days after the elections.

Speaking, Zulum dedicated his victory to God and the good people of Borno State, saying “I accepted the mandate to serve you for the second term”.

He pledged that he would fulfill his campaign promises to the people of the state.

“I commit to making sure, Insha’Allah, we will work hundred percent for the benefits of the citizens, natives, residents and good people of Borno state regardless of their ethnic or religious persuasion”.

He described democracy as the social adventure involving the contest of ideas, saying “those who manage to win are superior to those who does not win, it takes courage to contest by putting your resources and time to project your ideas for people to determine which direction they’ll follow”.

He reiterated his commitment to work with other political parties who are willing to give their support to the restoration of Borno.
