The Kogi State Government, Ahmed Usman Ododo has made it mandatory for students seeking admission into tertiary institutions to present their parents’ Tax Clearance Certificates (TCC).

This was disclosed by Mr. Sule Enehe, Chairman of the Kogi State Board of Internal Revenue Services, during a media briefing in Lokoja on Wednesday.

Enehe explained that the policy, implemented two years ago at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Ayingba, and Federal University, Lokoja, aims to boost the state’s revenue generation.

The policy has sparked controversy, with civil society organizations and members of the public criticizing it. Some activists have also threatened legal action, describing the initiative as counterproductive.

However, Enehe defended the policy, stating that it was introduced with good intentions and is backed by law.

“The Kogi State Government’s decision to require students to submit their parents’ TCC during registration is lawful and well-intentioned. Section 24(f) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria mandates citizens to declare their income and pay taxes.

Additionally, Section 96 of the Personal Income Tax Act prescribes prosecution for those who fail to comply with tax obligations,” he stated.

Enehe expressed surprise over the recent public backlash, noting that the policy had been in place for two years. He clarified that a memo was sent to the Secretary to the State Government at the time, and public announcements were made through radio and television jingles.

He further highlighted the financial burden on the state, which funds three universities and other tertiary institutions, stressing the need for public cooperation.

“We will enhance public awareness about this policy. It is in the best interest of the people and vital for the development of Kogi State,” he added.
