The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced that operations on the Lagos Blue Line rail will resume on Sunday morning following a fire outbreak near the old NEPA Station by Eko Bridge in the Apogbon area of Lagos Island.

In a statement issued by Kolawole Ojelabi, Head, Corporate Communication, LAMATA on Saturday, the body confirmed that the incident, which resulted from a cable spark, temporarily disrupted passenger operations on the Blue Line.

According to the release, emergency personnel were promptly alerted by surveillance cameras monitoring the section, and the response process was immediately activated.

LAMATA assured the public that no passengers or workers were endangered during the incident, adding that engineers are currently working to replace the damaged cables, and normal train services are expected to resume by Sunday morning.

The authority reiterated its commitment to the safe operation of the Blue Line, which is the first electrically-powered rail system in West Africa.

The statement reads partly, “No passengers on the train and workers were in danger following the fire incident. Engineers are working profusely to replace the burnt cables, and it is projected that train operation will resume Sunday morning.

“LAMATA is committed to ensuring the safe operation of the Blue Line, the first rail system to be powered by electricity in West Africa.”
