Amidst the strike action embarked upon by the organised labour, the Executive Chairman of Itire-Ikate Local Council Development Area, Hon. (Dr.) Ahmed Olanrewaju Apatira, distributed food items and grains to the elderly, people living with disabilities, and other residents within the LCDA.
The distribution of grains and cash to over 10,000 beneficiaries took place on Monday at the council secretariat, with beneficiaries drawn from the seven wards that make up the district.
The economic relief programme, Hon. Apatira stated, is designed to ease the economic burden on the people of the district, especially at the commencement of strike action by the NLC/TUC.
Beneficiaries who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune commended the council chairman, Dr Apatira, describing the intervention as timely and comforting to many families.
One of the beneficiaries from Baruwa Ward, Tunde Salami, expressed the difficulties he encountered coping with food inflation and other domestic needs.
While praising the council chairman for the initiative, he said, “It is not easy coping with this harsh economic situation, but for this intervention, as long as it lasts, we know we will be relieved. At least it will reach some, if not all, of the households within the district.”
Adebola Adeola, another beneficiary from Agunbiade Ward, described the initiative as a milestone in the history of leadership and good governance in the district.
She said, “We are thankful to the council chairman for this periodic intervention. It is a welcome idea, and we hope it will continue in this trend because many residents, not only within the community but in the entire state, are groaning over the increase in prices of food items and grains.”
A water vendor, Usman Dogo from Omilani ward, said the grain and the cash gift will go a long way in bringing comfort to his family.
He said, “I was passing by to supply water to one of my customers when I encountered the large turnout of people at the gate of the council secretariat.
“I walked in and joined the queue, and I was given this bag containing rice, beans, and garri with an envelope containing cash.
This is not the first time the chairman will be distributing food items, but I want to appeal to him to continue with it because many people are benefiting from such a good heart.”
In his address, Dr Apatira reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting residents and the physically challenged in every possible way to make life easier for them.
He mentioned that over 10,000 residents benefited from the food items and cash distribution, which is intended to ease the economic hardship of the most vulnerable among residents in Itire-Ikate.
Dr Apatira emphasised that food distribution is an ongoing initiative, and residents will continue to benefit from economic interventions of this nature.
