THE Lagos Government has announced that it has secured €410 million in funding to develop its blue economy. The funds will be used to integrate road, rail, and water transportation systems, providing a seamless, affordable, and sustainable commuting experience.

According to Ope George, Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, the project aims to decarbonize public transportation by developing mass public inland waterways transport with electric ferries (e-ferries).

The project includes upgrading 25 ferry terminals and jetties; acquiring 75 electric-powered vessels and establishing 15 ferry routes across the Lagos lagoon.

George reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving the welfare of its citizens.

“We prioritised social protection in the 2024 budget and will continue to do so in the 2025 budget. As a responsible government, we recognise that providing for our people goes beyond infrastructure, which is why we’ve included social protection in our budget,” he said during a consultative forum on the 2025 budget.
