The Lagos State Government is set to introduce a new category of vehicle number plates specifically designed to identify persons with disabilities (PWDs) across the state.
This was revealed on Tuesday during a ministerial briefing held to commemorate the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, explained that the initiative is part of broader efforts to improve mobility and inclusion for individuals with disabilities.

The Lagos State Number Plate Production Authority (LSNPPA) will spearhead the implementation of the scheme, ensuring it aligns with accessibility standards and the needs of PWDs.
“The authority is also into the production of customised 716 fancy motor vehicle plates and 347 motorcycle fancy plates for vehicle owners on request,” he said.
Beyond special number plates, Osiyemi shared progress made in the production of various other plate categories.
These include official, dealer, and articulated vehicle plates, alongside replacements for faded or damaged ones.
According to him, the state has also produced over 11,000 standard replacements and more than 1,500 dealer plates.
The commissioner noted that the initiative to issue special plates for PWDs is not only about identification but also about safety and easier enforcement of mobility-related rights.
He further highlighted ongoing collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to develop plates in line with the state’s environmental goals under the ‘Go Green’ agenda.
On the issue of fading number plates, Osiyemi urged car owners to be cautious of the cleaning materials used, emphasizing that abrasive substances can cause premature wear.
“We should also know that as man has a life span, so also are plate numbers; and they should be changed when the need arises,” he said.
