A Nigerian, identified as Sola Salako Ajulo, has written a letter to the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, suggesting the creation of more mega cities as a way of decongesting Lagos.

Ajulo, in a letter posted on his Twitter handle on Thursday and addressed to Tinubu, stated that there is unnecessary pressure on Nigeria’s most populous city.

He wrote, “Pataki oro mi si yin l’owuro yi ni pe, I want you to make the need for multiple mega cities in Nigeria a major priority of your incoming administration.

“As a fellow Lagosian and one of its illustrious sons and previous Governors, you will agree with me that “pressure ti wa” fun Eko gidi gan. Lagos is bursting at its seams.”

He asserted that the standard of living in Lagos has dropped significantly due to overpopulation, adding that “the ratio of population to infrastructure is quite dismal.”

According to him, “A nation as diverse as Nigeria 🇳🇬cannot develop evenly when there is a concentration of commercial power in only one city. It is not healthy for the city itself. For instance, Tokyo is so densely populated that the government is offering cash incentives for people to migrate to other parts of Japan.

“Many claim the concentration of infrastructure in Lagos gives us undue advantage. If that is true, then it is not fair sir. You have always been a fair and inclusive leader and I trust that you can balance this equitably,” he added.

Ajulo, however, urged the President-elect to consider making one mega city out of each of the six geographical zones he highlighted in the country, describing them as already having commercial traffic which he said has ripples of benefits.

“North West – Kano City, North East – Maiduguri City, Noth Central – Jos City, South East – Aba City, South-South – Port Harcourt City, South West – Lagos City (done)”
