“My wife told everyone who cared to listen to him that I was involved in money ritual. She claimed that we were unable to have children because I used my manhood for ritual purpose. She did not relent in denting my image until I married another wife who bore me a handsome child.”
Kazeem Jeje gave this as part of his testimony in a case where he filed a divorce suit against his wife, Kalifat Jeje whom he accused of being troublesome and never relenting in soiling his name.
According to the plaintiff, he lost his peace the moment he got married to the defendant.
He stated that his wife always sought every opportunity to fight him and that she refused to change even after he reported her to her family members who mediated in their differences on regular basis.
Kazeem added that the most worrisome of her behaviour was the manner at which she went about spreading lies that they could not have children because he used his manhood for ritual purpose.
Kazeem further stated that Kalifat was in the habit of ransacking his room behind him, in search of fetish items to back her claim.
According to him, he had a little respite after he took to his father in law’s advice to marry another wife, who bore him a lovely child.
The plaintiff said that the defendant after a while went back to fighting him at home and even in his office thus humiliating him.
Kazeem prayed the court to dissolve their wedlock and order his wife to move out of his house.
He further begged for an order restraining his wife from coming to his house and office to embarrass or fight him.
Kalifat did not make an appearance in court although she was served both a court summon and court hearing.
Kazeem in his evidence said, “I met my wife 20 years ago. We held an introduction ceremony after we decided to go into wedlock and I paid her bride price.
“Kalifat started giving me problem immediately we got married.
“She frustrated every effort I made in ensuring that peace reigned in our home.
“She was fond of complaining and raising false accusations against me.
“Kalifat to my chagrin accused me of being involved in money ritual.
“She went about telling people we could not have children because I used my manhood for money ritual.
“She soiled my name and dented my image among our relatives, friends and neighbours.
“Kalifat always ransacked my room in search of fetish objects to back her claim any time I was out of the house.
“I called her family members’ attention to her atrocities, but the more they mediated in our differences the worse she became.
“Her father, fed up with her shameful ways advised that I took another wife which I later did.
“My second wife bore me handsome child to Kalifat’s shame.
“This development initially calmed her, and I had respite, but this was not for long.
“My wife went back to her old ways and even got worse, for she fights me not only at home these days, but also comes to my office to embarrass me.
“My lord, I am fed up with the cat and mouse lifestyle my wife and I are living.
“I want our marriage dissolved and Kalifat out of my house and life.
“I also pray the court to establish an order restraining her from coming to my house and office to threaten and fight me.
The president of the court, Mrs S.M Akintayo, after she had heard the plaintiff adjourned the case till January, 31, 2024.
She ordered a fresh hearing notice to be issued and served the defendant.
