A review of Ngozi Ekweremadu’s book, New Apartheid: A Nigerian Whistleblower.
NGOZI Ekweremadu’s book, ‘New Apartheid: A Nigerian Whistleblower,’ brings to the fore the evil of racism against blacks.
Through her unique style of writing, she draws attention to injustices being meted out to black people and nations across the world.
Ekweremadu highlights the challenges being faced by footballer, Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid; Megan Markle, wife of Prince Harry, among others, which she links to the colour of their skins.
She, however, believes that ignorance is the major reason some people discriminate against those who look differently from them.
She says, “No one should suffer for what they neither made nor chose and cannot change.”
Here, she uses Plato’s quote, “The blame is his who chooses. God is blameless.”
For the black nations, the author considers their relationship with Western countries only tilts in favour of the latter. She says: “Only stupid Africans expect Caucasians to voluntarily relinquish several centuries-old advantageous positions in exchange for nothing, and only stupider Africans expect white supremacist Freemason judges to measure black people with the same yardstick they use to measure their own white kindred.”
The author, therefore, charged black people to embrace self-worth in the midst of the hatred and quotes freedom fighter, Steven Biko, as saying, “The most potent weapon in the hand of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.”
She further encourages black people that, “intellect is a function of genetic mix, and it is the exclusive preserve of the Creator, and it has absolutely nothing to do with skin colour.
“Skin colour is a great creation of Almighty God, but it is not the greatest.”
On the state black countries are at the moment, Ekweremadu states that Western countries are only rich because of slavery and the exploitation of the natural resources in Africa.
In the past, the author says the West, “carried and sold stolen children. Now, what has changed?,” she asks, “now, they steal natural resources. Substitution is continuing slavery, as the sole purpose of slavery is exploitative economic gains.”
On the progress made over the years to tackle these imbalances between developed Western nations and developing black nations, the author quotes Sara Sheridan who says, “Change occurs slowly. Very often a legal change might take place, but the cultural shift required to really accept its spirit lingers in the wings for decades.”
With this, she states that though racism is a form of crime all over the world, and there are sanctions against those who discriminate against others, there is still subtle racism against people who look differently.
In the end, the author believes black people and nations must not be weighed down by racism or exploitative actions, but look at what they can do to thrive in the modern world with the intellect/resources bequeathed to them by God.
Published by Amazon in Great Britain, the 186-page book preaches to people of colour to always rise above negativities directed at them by racists, while black nations should also have the self-believe that they can also do great things by looking inward and utilising their resources positively, and for the benefit of their people.
