Authorities in New Zealand have launched an intensive search for three climbers who went missing during an attempt to climb Aoraki Mount Cook, the country’s tallest peak.

The missing men, identified as 56-year-old Kurt Blair and 50-year-old Carlos Romero from the United States, along with a Canadian national whose identity is yet to be released, were reported overdue after their planned ascent.

The trio arrived at Plateau Hut by helicopter on the afternoon of Saturday, November 30, intending to reach the summit via Zurbriggen Ridge.

They were scheduled to return for their flight on Monday morning, December 2, but failed to show up, prompting authorities to begin a search.

Aoraki Mount Cook, which stands at 12,218 feet, is part of the Southern Alps, a rugged mountain range spanning New Zealand’s South Island. Inspector Vicki Walker, the Aoraki Area Commander, confirmed that several climbing-related items believed to belong to the men were discovered during the initial search efforts.

The search operation, involving the Department of Conservation Search and Rescue Team, The Helicopter Line, and local police, faced a setback on Wednesday as severe weather conditions prevented further activity on the mountain.

Authorities stated, “Weather conditions are likely to prevent any further search activity until Thursday this week. However, Police will continue to monitor and assess the conditions.”

Efforts are ongoing to support the families of the missing climbers, with police collaborating with the US and Canadian embassies. Officials noted that further details about the Canadian climber would only be released after all family notifications had been completed.

Rescuers remain hopeful but acknowledge the challenges posed by the harsh weather and Mount Cook’s treacherous terrain. The search will resume as soon as conditions allow.
