A non-governmental organisation, The Zadaya-Kanem PDI has launched a sensitisation campaign on mine action, drug use and hand hygiene in Borno State, targeting disabled persons.

The campaign, themed “Promoting Safety, Health and Wellbeing for Resilient Communities,” aims to educate participants on the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of mine action and hand hygiene.

Speaking during the launch in Maiduguri, Adama Balla, Executive Director of Zadaya-Kanem PDI, said the campaign would create awareness and promote safe communities in Borno, which has experienced over a decade of Boko Haram insurgency.

According to her, mine action addresses the dangers posed by landmines, unexploded bombs and other explosive remnants of war.

“Its primary objective is to ensure safe living, farming and movement,” she explained.

Balla emphasized the importance of hand hygiene in preventing the spread of infections. “Washing hands with soap and water significantly reduces germ transmission,” she said.

Abdullahi Sardauna, Borno NDLEA Deputy Commander, expressed concern over the rising cases of drug abuse among disabled persons in Maiduguri and its environs. “The NDLEA has initiated a critical programme to combat substance abuse,” he disclosed.

The campaign, supported by Lafiya Programme UK, is part of efforts to promote safety, health and wellbeing in resilient communities in Borno State, aiming to create a lasting impact for future generations.

In an interview with Nigerian Tribune, participants Ali Ibrahim and Fatima Maina commended the organisers, saying the campaign would yield positive results.

The event was well-attended by stakeholders, including government officials, non-governmental organisations and community leaders. Participants praised the initiative, saying it would go a long way in promoting safety and wellbeing among disabled persons in Borno.
