The escalating violence in Osun State has once again brought Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration under scrutiny, as renewed clashes in Ifon and Ilobu communities have resulted in significant loss of lives and property.

Barely three days ago, Senator Ajibola Basiru described the Osun government as a “set of vampires using citizens’ blood to water their administration,” a statement that drew sharp criticism from government loyalists. His remarks were met with outrage, with supporters of the administration calling for his head and dismissing his claims as baseless attacks.

However, just 72 hours later, fresh violence has erupted in the state, particularly in Ifon and Ilobu, where deadly clashes have claimed over twenty lives, razed homes, and left businesses in ruins. The resurgence of violence has raised concerns about the effectiveness of Governor Adeleke’s response to security challenges.

Critics argue that Adeleke’s decision to establish a 100-man committee to address the crisis was an ineffective approach, likening it to assembling a delegation for the Summer Olympics rather than tackling a security emergency. More than two months after its inauguration, the situation remains volatile, with fears that the death toll could rise even further before any meaningful intervention occurs.

Observers have also condemned what they describe as Adeleke’s performative approach to governance, accusing him of shedding “crocodile tears” while failing to take decisive action. His critics argue that his tenure has been marked by bloodshed and instability, with his administration struggling to maintain peace in crisis-prone areas.

Meanwhile, Senator Basiru has expressed deep sympathy for the families of those who lost their lives and those whose properties were destroyed in the latest wave of violence. He called for urgent measures to restore peace and prevent further bloodshed.

As Osun residents grapple with the continued insecurity, many are now looking ahead to 2026, viewing the next election as a crucial opportunity to reassess the leadership of the state.
