About 300 widows have received food items and cash gifts, courtesy of the wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde, in commemoration of the 2024 International Widows Day.
The event held at the office of the wife of the Oyo Governor, Ibadan, on Friday, saw the widows, drawn from across the 33 local government areas of the state, receive food packages containing rice and vegetable oil.
Speaking, Oyo Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Toyin Balogun, enjoined widows not to feel weighed down by widowhood but to see it as an opportunity to demonstrate their resilience and creativity.
She also enjoined widows to keep themselves engaged and make efforts to constantly develop themselves.
Also speaking, Head of Service of the State, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, said the gesture showed the commitment of the state government to sustainability in the welfare of widows and citizens in general.
She also tasked them with being self-reliant, financially independent, and prioritising themselves and the good lives of their children.
Also speaking, Director of Nursing, Oyo Ministry of Health, Omokehinde Oyebode, tasked the widows with personal hygiene and a periodic health checkup.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Deborah Agboola from Ogbomoso North, prayed for the government to continue to support widows to relieve them of the psychological and financial burdens they faced after the loss of their husbands.
