Bolaji Idowu, the lead pastor of Harvesters International Christian Centre, has advised brides to show consideration when setting the price for Asoebi, a traditional Nigerian attire worn at weddings.
In a sermon titled “Dealing with financial difficulties” shared via his social media handle on Thursday, June 6, popularly known as Pastor B, expressed concern over exorbitant prices for Asoebi.
He remarked, “All of you that are doing marriage, that are doing Asoebi, have mercy. Asoebi 350,000, that’s 2 months salary.
“You will now put them under pressure and say, if you are my loyal friend, if you are my gang, you will buy this, it is just a one-time wedding, N350,000.”
Pastor B emphasised that the burden of expensive Asoebi should not be placed on guests, highlighting that wearing the attire does not automatically guarantee friendship or loyalty.
He continued, “You are the one that is wedding, we are not wedding with you. The fact that I wear Asoebi does not mean I can’t be your enemy.
“Judas ate with Jesus Christ, he betrayed him. John (sic) of Arimathea did not know Jesus Christ, he saved him.
“The person who carried the cross, Simon the Cyrene, nobody heard about him. So the fact that they wore Asoebi does not mean they are your friends.”
Pastor B urged individuals not to succumb to societal pressures, especially when it comes to financial matters.
He cautioned against comparing one’s financial status with that of others, highlighting that true friends may not necessarily be the ones participating in lavish displays of wealth.
He concluded, “Sometimes, the people that will carry your cross are not the people that eat with you.”
