

The Nigerian Police, Oyo State Command, has deployed personnel to secure lives and properties in the state capital, Ibadan, and its environs sequel to lifting of order on the ban on Egungun festival by Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun.
Tribune Online reports that Oba Balogun suspended the activities following the reported pockets of violence in some areas a few weeks ago but subsequently lifted the ban after a meeting with Alagbaas and other relevant stakeholders.

However, the Command in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso, has assured residents of maximum protection of lives and property.
The statement read, “The Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that it has concluded plans to effectively secure residents and good citizens alike following the ‘Suspension-lift order’ on the Annual Egungun Festivities by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Sen.Lekan Balogun,CFR,Alli Okunmade II.
“Consequent on the above, with effect Monday, July 24/07/2023, the security architecture of the Command would tilt comprehensively towards preserving law and order during the next phase of the Egungun processions and beyond the festivities.
“In furtherance of the above, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Adebola Hamzat,psc,FICMC fdc,Ph.D has ordered the immediate deployment and marshalling of Command’s operational, intelligence and tactical assets towards the overall success of the event.
“In the same direction, residents shall witness high octane patrols, intelligence led stop and search and technology enhanced surveillance duties during the build-up to the commencement of the next phase of the festivities.
“While assuring the general public to go about their lawful businesses without fear of harassment or molestation, the Oyo State Police Command warns against breaching the relative tranquility enjoyed in the State by agents of mischief.
“The Command further advises Parents, Guardians and leaders of influence in the Society to prevail on their Children,Wards and Proteges against being used by criminal elements to disrupt the processions in a bid to create panic and blood-letting as heavy sanctions would be meted out on any one found culpable in accordance with relevant laws”
