The UNESCO Institute for African Culture and International Understanding (IACIU) has urged Nigerians to explore the potential of recycled arts for a more sustainable economy and foster job creation.
The institute disclosed this during an entrepreneurship programme on “Promoting Creative Entrepreneurship through Recycled Arts,” held in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Thursday.
Director of the institute, Professor Emeritus Peter Okebukola, while addressing participants at the programme noted that recycling is not just about reprocessing materials, but about reimagining possibilities.
He stressed that transforming discarded items into art will give new life to what would otherwise be waste, and create unique products and experiences that can resonate with consumers and businesses alike.
Okebukola argued that in Nigeria, where waste management is a significant challenge, recycling offers a promising solution.
His words: “In a world where sustainability and innovation are more crucial than ever, the intersection of creativity and environmental stewardship offers an exciting frontier for entrepreneurs.
“Today, we gather to explore how recycled arts not only contribute to a more sustainable future but also foster vibrant and dynamic business opportunities.”
He noted that the potential of recycled art is to inspire new ventures, engage communities, and drive economic growth while championing environmental responsibility.
He added: “By transforming discarded items into art, we’re not only giving new life to what would otherwise be waste, but we’re also creating unique products and experiences that can resonate with consumers and businesses alike.
“This innovative approach challenges us to think differently and opens a realm of opportunities for creative entrepreneurs.”
