The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, assured Nigerians at the weekend that the 10th Assembly is committed to addressing critical national challenges and ensuring rapid development.

 

He made the promise while opening a training retreat for members of the House Press Corps, organized with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

In his speech, the Speaker outlined the 10th House’s Legislative Agenda as a comprehensive and ambitious blueprint aimed at tackling the country’s most pressing issues. He emphasized the Assembly’s focus on:

 

Driving economic growth

 

Enhancing national security

 

Improving healthcare access

 

Reforming education

 

Advancing good governance

 

 

Rep. Abbas also highlighted that, in its first year, the House had passed 89 bills, with many others currently progressing through various stages of passage. Some notable bills include:

 

The Electric Power Sector Reform (Amendment) Bill, 2023

 

The Federal Audit Service Bill, 2023

 

The Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Bill, 2023

 

The Armed Forces Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023

 

The National Assembly Library Trust Fund Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024

 

The Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act, 2024

 

The Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024

 

The National Anthem Bill, 2024

 

The Traditional Complementary and Alternative Medicine Council of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2023

 

 

These bills address key aspects of governance, security, and economic reform, among others.

 

Rep. Abbas commended the work of journalists covering the House of Representatives for their dedication, professionalism, and role in bridging the gap between lawmakers and the public.

 

He noted that the media plays a crucial role in promoting transparency and accountability in governance, and thanked them for empowering citizens to engage in the legislative process and hold leaders accountable.

 

The Speaker further emphasized the importance of the ongoing workshop, where members of the Press Corps will explore the eight priority areas of the Legislative Agenda, which are closely aligned with the National Development Agenda.
