In a disturbing development, a 17-year-old secondary school student, Owami Visagie, was allegedly raped and murdered by her cousin in Gauteng, South Africa.
According to a local source, the victim departed her home around 6 pm on Sunday but disturbingly never returned, prompting her mother to report her missing to local authorities later that evening.
The search for the young girl led her family to a cousin’s residence the next day upon receiving a tip-off. It is believed she was last seen in this individual’s company.
It was there, in a chilling discovery, that they stumbled upon the lifeless body of the learner in a room.
In a swift turn of events, a suspect subsequently turned himself into the police force. He is due for a court appearance at the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
“We have been informed that the learner was likely sexually assaulted and then killed by strangulation,” disclosed Steve Mabona, a spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education.
Meanwhile, police spokesperson, Lt. Col Mavela Masondo on Thursday, said the case has been at Cullinan police station.
He confirmed that the suspect handed himself into the police, adding that he made an appearance in court on Wednesday.
