Hundreds of All Progressive Congress (APC) members from the Irewole local government area of OSUN state decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday with a pledge to work round the clock to ensure the party’s victory in the 2026 elections.
The decampees who added that they would not relent in making PDP as a party more virile in the local government and the state through their total commitment and loyalty, assured of adding more value to its progress in the locality.
While welcoming them into the PDP fold in Ikire, the headquarters of the local government, the lawmaker, representing Osun West Senatorial district in the Senate, Senator Lere Oyewumi, attributed the people’s decision to the achievements recorded by Adeleke’s administration, which executed various projects that have positively impacted the lives of the residents.
According to him, their defection was not due to recruitment tactics but rather a case of “self-conviction because of the good works the governor is doing in the state, and the little efforts of our stakeholders attracted them to come back to the PDP.”
“People have tasted PDP and APC, so you don’t need to campaign. People can judge the two and take the one that suits their purpose, and they are convinced to support Governor Ademola Adeleke in the 2026 gubernatorial election through their massive voting.
“Adeleke has campaigned for himself. He has not spent two years in office. In Ikire alone, he has tarred almost 5 kilometres of road. He has completed two; he’s working on one that is almost 60% complete. He has completed about three secondary schools and about five primary schools. He has also renovated about seven maternity centres.
“All our wards in Ikire have at least two boreholes from him apart from other non-physical things like outreach on health. You know things on health are very critical.
“We are not ingrates. The people of Irewole can see. We had people in better positions from this town before, but the town did not experience any change. I trust my people; they are ready to pay him back with three times the votes of what we did last time. Irewole is already gone for PDP.”
In his remarks at the event, Osun PDP chairman, Mr Sunday Bisi, who received the defectors, rejoiced with them for joining the PDP, which he described as the only progressive and hopeful party that could give solace to people in the state.
Hon. Bisi assured them of the party’s cooperation to make PDP homely for them and charged them to work hard for PDP success in their different wards of the local government.
Speaking on behalf of other decampees from the APC, Hon. Taofeek Adewumi stated that they joined the PDP because of the sincerity and total commitment of Governor Ademola Adeleke in developing the state in rapidity since he emerged as the state governor.
He also commended Hon. Lere Oyewumi for his contributions to the development of his constituency and, at the same time, gave kudos to him for contributing immensely to the uplifting of humanity through various programs organised to alleviate poverty in the lives of all and sundry, especially the vulnerable and less privileged ones in the areas.
He, however, assured their determination to ensure the victory of the governor at the poll in the 2026 governorship election in the state.
